Carrés have a slightly harder consistency than normal pastels and are a little less pigmented which makes them more transparent.
These Carrés give accurate and energetic strokes when the edges of the sticks are used, and artists can produce flat areas by using the flat of the crayon to create the values. Move the crayon with broad strokes and even pressure to make the most of the paper’s tooth. The square shape of the crayon inspires a lot of different techniques. To cover large areas, use the long, flat side. For different intensity, you just vary the pressure. For fine detail use the short side and its edges. Use them on coloured paper to achieve a deeper lustre.
